Okay so firstly, yup that’s a pretty cool application. Amazing in fact. Instant translations, on the screen, in situ, as in right there in the camera view, of signs etc. Awesome.
Secondly, The Economist seems to be using an online application called Apture. If you highlight some text on the page, you get a “Learn more” contextual link. If you click on that you get a floating div with relevant search results from Wikipedia, The Economist and more… I’d never seen that before but I like it. A good idea well implemented.

I’ve been playing around some more with my HTML5 Canvas Kaleidoscope experiment. I’ve made it more robust and played around with the flickr API to get more out of it (you can view other flickr users photos in it now). The main improvement is that the you can link to a particular photo being viewed through the kaleidoscope.

Did I learn anything about actively listening to and talking about records? Absolutely. I most importantly learned that if there’s something you’re passionate — or at least obsessive — about, it’s worth doing every day and holding yourself to. Even if you’re not getting paid for it.

I spent a bit of time looking at some of these sites. It reminded me of being a student again…
I particularly enjoyed the Sounds of Hamburg site.

I thought this was an interesting approach. The idea I guess is to focus on the important aspects of a page/interface and the relationships between them before you start laying them out on a page.

I love things like this:
[SolarBeat is a] simple ambient musicbox, with sounds generated using the orbital frequencies of our solar system.
